Beer flavonoid may boost brain power ## Beer Make you Smarter




A compound found in hops— one of the basic ingredients of beer— is capable of improving memory and thought patterns in mice, reported Quartz.

In a new study from Oregon State University, researchers sought to found out if xanthohumol, a flavonoid found only in hops, could slow down palmitoylation— a natural process associated with memory degradation in animals and humans.  A group of young and old mice were put on an eight-week diet of xanthohumol, a flavonoid found only in hops.

After going through a series of tests, the younger mice showed improvement in spatial memory and cognitive flexibility. The older mice did not show any changes.

While hops are the only dietary source of the rare compound, it would require drinking 2,000 liters of beer— or 5,636 bottles of beer— for a person to get the same effect.

The findings suggest that xanothohumol could potentially be used to treat cognitive problems

Red wine IS good for cutting blood pressure (but you need to take out the alcohol)

The good news, for red wine lovers, is that it really can cut your blood pressure.
The bad news is the alcohol has to be removed first.
Drinking non-alcoholic red wine might not sound as much fun, but for people at risk of heart problems it could be a lifesaver, it is claimed.
A study shows for the first time that natural antioxidant compounds in red wine – not the alcohol – are good for your heart health.
Researchers in Spain say the alcohol weakens the ability of red wine to cut blood pressure, effectively cancelling out any benefits.
They found that men at high risk for heart disease had lower blood pressure after drinking non-alcoholic red wine every day for four weeks.
The researchers studied 67 men with diabetes or three or more cardiovascular risk factors who ate a common diet combined with different drinking habits.

The red wine and non-alcoholic wine contained equal amounts of polyphenols, an antioxidant that decreases blood pressure.
High blood pressure, or hypertension which is classified as more than 140/90, is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke.
The first figure, the systolic pressure, corresponds to the ‘surge’ that occurs with each heartbeat while the diastolic reading is the pressure  in the ‘resting’ stage between beats.During the red wine phase, the men had very little reduction in blood pressure and there was no change while drinking gin.
However, after drinking non-alcoholic red wine, blood pressure decreased by about six in systolic and two in diastolic blood pressure, possibly reducing the risk  of heart disease by 14 per cent and stroke by as much as  20 per cent.
The study is published in the American Heart Association journal Circulation Research.

But researchers think any diet rich in polyphenols, which are known to protect against the development of chronic diseases — they're found amply in red wine — could be why.
  5. Lowers Risk Of Heart Disease and Stroke: Red wine tannins, which are what make red wine the color red, contain procyanidins — known for protecting against heart disease. Resveratrol also helps to remove chemicals responsible for causing blood clots, which is the primary cause of coronary disease. A daily dose of red wine cuts blood clot-related stroke rates by 50 percent.

CHAMPAGNE IS GOOD FOR YOUR HEART !





The University promotes a safe and responsible attitude to alcohol consumption
Research from the University of Reading suggests that two glasses of Champagne a day may be good for your heart and circulation. The researchers have found that drinking Champagne wine daily in moderate amounts causes improvements in the way blood vessels function.

Champagne does this by increasing the availability of nitric oxide, a vascular active molecule which controls blood pressure. It is able to induce these effects because it contains polyphenols, plant chemicals from the red grapes and white grapes used in Champagne production.

When you drink Champagne, these polyphenols get absorbed into the circulation where they are able to act on the vascular system.  Specifically, they appear to slow down the natural removal of nitric oxide from our blood, meaning that it will have a longer time to act on blood vessels and so improve the flow of blood around the body.

High nitric oxide levels in the blood, as a result of drinking Champagne, can have beneficial effects, because as well as increasing blood flow, it may help to decrease both blood pressure and the likelihood of blood clots forming. This could therefore reduce the risks of suffering from cardiovascular disease and stroke, but more research needs to be done to determine the long term effects of daily Champagne consumption.

Dr Jeremy Spencer, from the Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences said: "Our research has shown that drinking around two glasses of Champagne can have beneficial effects on the way blood vessels function, in a similar way to that observed with red wine. We always encourage a responsible approach to alcohol consumption, but the fact that drinking Champagne has the potential to reduce the risks of suffering from cardiovascular diseases such as heart disease and stroke, is very exciting news."

New alcohol guidelines show increased Risk or No

Updated alcohol consumption guidelines give new advice on limits for men and pregnant women.



New proposed guidelines on alcohol, drawn up by the Chief Medical Officers of the UK, have been published today.
The expert group that produced the guidelines looked at the body of new evidence about the potential harms of alcohol that has emerged since the previous guidelines were published in 1995.
There are three main issues on which revised or new guidance is given:
  • guidance on regular drinking
  • guidance on single drinking sessions
  • guidance on drinking in pregnancy
Regular drinking
The guidance advises that:
  • to keep health risks from drinking alcohol to a low level you are safest not regularly drinking more than 14 units per week – 14 units is equivalent to a bottle and a half of wine or five pints of export-type lager (5% a bv) over the course of a week – this applies to both men and women
  • if you do drink as much as 14 units per week, it is best to spread this evenly over three days or more
  • if you have one or two heavy drinking sessions, you increase your risks of death from long-term illnesses and from accidents and injuries
  • the risk of developing a range of illnesses (including, for example, cancers of the mouth, throat and breast) increases with any amount you drink on a regular basis
  • if you wish to cut down the amount you're drinking, a good way to achieve this is to have several alcohol-free days each week

Single drinking sessions

The new proposed guidelines also look at the potential risks of single drinking sessions, which can include accidents resulting in injury (causing death in some cases), misjudging risky situations, and losing self-control.
You can reduce these risks by:
  • limiting the total amount of alcohol you drink on any occasion
  • drinking more slowly, drinking with food, and alternating alcoholic drinks with water
  • avoiding risky places and activities, making sure you have people you know around, and ensuring you can get home safely
Some groups of people are more likely to be affected by alcohol and should be more careful of their level of drinking. These include:
  • young adults
  • older people
  • those with low body weight
  • those with other health problems
  • those on medicines or other drugs

  • Drinking and pregnancy

         The guidelines recommend that:
  • if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, the safest approach is not to drink alcohol at all, to keep risks to your baby to a minimum
  • drinking in pregnancy can lead to long-term harm to the baby, with the more you drink the greater the risk
If you are worried about how much you have been drinking when pregnant, talk to your doctor or midwife.
